What Makes a High-Quality Mushroom Extract

What Makes a High-Quality Mushroom Extract

Not All Mushrooms Are the Same

Mushroom supplements have exploded in popularity.

Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi — they’re everywhere now.

But like most things in this space, what’s on the label doesn’t always reflect what’s actually inside.

Two products can both say “Lion’s Mane” — and be completely different in quality, potency, and effect.

Fruiting Body vs Mycelium

One of the most important distinctions is what part of the mushroom is being used.

The fruiting body is the actual mushroom — the part that grows above ground and contains the highest concentration of beneficial compounds.

Mycelium, on the other hand, is the root-like structure, often grown on grain.

Many lower-quality products use mycelium because it’s cheaper and easier to produce — but it often comes diluted with starch from the growth medium.

In simple terms:

  • Fruiting body = the mushroom

  • Mycelium = the roots (often mixed with filler)

Why Extraction Matters

Mushrooms aren’t easily digested in their raw form.

Their beneficial compounds are locked within tough cell walls made of chitin — which the human body can’t fully break down.

That’s where extraction comes in.

A proper extraction process helps release these compounds, making them more bioavailable and easier for the body to use.

Without extraction, much of the benefit is simply lost.

What “8:1 Extract” Actually Means

You’ll often see ratios like 1:1, 4:1, 8:1, 10:1, and beyond.

This refers to how concentrated the extract is.

An 8:1 extract means 8 parts of raw mushroom were used to create 1 part of extract — resulting in a more concentrated and potent product.

But ratios alone don’t tell the full story.

They matter most when paired with high-quality starting material and proper extraction methods.

Beta-Glucans: The Real Marker of Quality

If there’s one thing to look for, it’s beta-glucans.

Beta-glucans are the primary bioactive compounds in mushrooms — responsible for many of their functional and immune-supporting benefits.

High-quality extracts are typically standardized for beta-glucan content.

Lower-quality products may list “polysaccharides,” which can include starches and don’t necessarily reflect true potency.

In simple terms:

  • Beta-glucans = what you’re actually looking for

  • “Polysaccharides” = not always what it seems

Why We Focus on One Mushroom — Not Five

Many blends include a wide range of mushrooms — Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Chaga, and more — often combined into a single formula.

On paper, that sounds powerful.

But when the total dose is spread across multiple ingredients, the amount of each individual mushroom is often quite small — sometimes just a few hundred milligrams.

At those levels, the impact becomes questionable.

We took a different approach.

Rather than including many mushrooms in small amounts, we chose to focus on one — and use it in a dose that actually matters.

Why Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane is one of the most studied functional mushrooms, particularly for its role in cognitive function, focus, and neural health.

Its bioactive compounds have been shown to support nerve growth factor (NGF), which plays a key role in brain function and mental performance.

It also pairs naturally with both cacao and coffee — supporting clarity, focus, and sustained cognitive output without overstimulation.

Dose Matters

Each serving of our blends contains 1500 mg of Lion’s Mane (fruiting body, 8:1 extract).

Not split across multiple mushrooms. Not hidden in a blend. Just one ingredient, used in an amount designed to be felt.

Because when it comes to functional ingredients, effectiveness isn’t about how many you include — it’s about how much you actually get.

The Mavi Approach

At Mavi Goods, we use organic Lion’s Mane fruiting body extract, concentrated to an 8:1 ratio and standardized to >30% beta-glucans.

No mycelium. No grain fillers. No inflated labels.

Just a form that’s been carefully selected, properly extracted, and included in a dose that actually matters.

Closing

Not all mushrooms are created equal.

And not all extracts are designed to be felt.

When quality is prioritized from the start, the difference becomes obvious.
